The noble Possessioni Serego Alighieri belong to the direct descendants of the poet Dante, and form Valpolicella's oldest and most traditional estates. The property was bought as far back as 1353 by Pietro Alighieri, Dante's son, who had followed his father into exile in Verona and had stayed in the area after the poet's death. Since then, winemaking has been a continuous tradition in the family, and the tradition continues today. After twenty generations, the lands and dwellings on the estates currently belong to Count Pieralvise di Serego Alighieri. The villa is the titular centre of a vast and flourishing agricultural and oenological enterprise, managed in collaboration with Masi Agricola, who have supplied modern technical expertise and an international distribution channel for the unique Serego Alighieri wines and agricultural products that come from these historic lands, now found on sale all over the world.
The noble wines produced on the Serego Alighieri ancient estates comprise the rich and complex Vaio Armaron, the epitome of Amarone; refined Valpolicella Classico Superiore MontePiazzo; the sweet red Casal dei Ronchi, the Recioto that has always used been kept back for the family's guests; spicy Possessioni Rosso; floral Possessioni Bianco and the intense Poderi BellOvile, produced on the eponymous estate in Tuscany.
The range is completed with an excellent extra-virgin olive oil, the balsamic condiment, a soft grappa di Amarone, the Veronese speciality Vialone Nano rice, delicate acacia honey, authentic chestnut spread and cherry jam, made from the Serego Alighieris' favourite fruit, grown on the estates.
The estate boasts an ancient cellars, particularly interesting for its sweet-smelling cherry-wood wine barrels, used for maturation and to give a characteristic finishing touch to the estate's wines. There is also a traditional grape-drying loft, where the grapes are laid out to dry on bamboo racks for the long winter months. Nearby, there is an attractive shop, open to the public, where Serego Alighieri and Masi wines can be sampled and purchased. Also available is an exclusive range of older and historic vintages of Amarone.
Shop opening hours: Monday to Saturday, 10.00 - 18.00 hrs.

The Foresteria building on the ancient estate has been sympathetically restored and turned into a "residence" comprising conference rooms, eight elegant apartments, and the rooms necessary for food and wine service and consumption using Masi and Serego Alighieri wines. The Foresteria is furnished in smart country house style, equipped with every comfort and in perfect harmony with its surroundings.
Masi supports the fascinating project which links winemaking experience with the symbolic return of the Alighieri family to Tuscany through the purchase of the Poderi del Bello Ovile estate in Cinigiano, on the border with Montalcino, where the Counts Serego Alighieri now make a red IGT Toscana wine, Poderi del Bello Ovile. The name of the estate and the wine refers to a verse written by Dante in which the exiled poet dreams of returning to his native land, the bello ovile or "fine sheepfold" referred to here.
