Excellent scores by James Suckling

The well-known American critic, James Suckling recently recorded excellent scores in his tasting report for the Masi and Serego Alighieri wines. Great acclaim for the Amarones with scores between 95 and 96 points, and for the wines of Serego Alighieri in Tuscany, including the new Vermentino that received 91 points on its market debut.

The following are the scores of James Suckling’s tasting notes:

MASI COSTASERA 2015 (95/100)
Amarone della Valpolicella Classico docg

This opens beautifully to reveal violets, blueberries, licorice, citrus, oyster shell and orange rind. So velvety and polished, but with real depth and structure. Medium-to full-bodied with delightful fruit and a long finish. Drink in 2021 but already so satisfying.

MASI COSTASERA RISERVA 2013 (95/100)
Amarone della Valpolicella Classico docg

Aromas of smoke and wet earth with coffee beans and pumice to the ripe fruit. Full-bodied, linear and layered with lots of ripe fruit and hints of raisins. Lightly chewy with a tannin backbone. Extremely long and powerful. Blue and black fruit. Very complex. Drinkable now, but better in 2022.

MASI BROLO CAMPOFIORIN ORO 2015 (93/100)
Rosso del Veronese igt

A very elegant Veneto red, redolent of dried oregano and rosemary, which then moves gracefully through violet and lavender notes. Structured but beautifully restrained and polished with its blue and red fruit, offering crystal-clear transparency. Medium-to full-bodied yet quite long and medium chewy on the finish. Drink now, though better in 2023.

MASI CAMPOFIORIN 2016 (92/100)
Rosso del Veronese igt

Exuberant morello cherries, raspberry coulis and subtler notes of dried orange peel come to the surface. The medium-bodied palate has some bite with a solid backbone of firm tannins. Drink now.

SEREGO ALIGHIERI VAIO ARMARON 2013 (96/100)
Amarone della Valpolicella Classico docg

A very unique wine with cherry wood, light varnish and dark black fruit. Full body, soft and velvety and extremely long. Wonderful length and generosity. Creamy and round textured, yet long and flavorful. Fresh finish. Four months in cherry wood barrels make this special. Drink now or hold.

SEREGO ALIGHIERI MONTE PIAZZO 2016 (93/100)
Valpolicella Classico Superiore doc

The blackberry and wet-earth aromas and flavors are impressive. Precise and focused. Medium body. Firm tannins and a pretty austerity on the finish. Drink now.

SEREGO ALIGHIERI PODERI BELLOVILE 2016 (92/100)
Rosso di Toscana igt

A delicious, layered red with dark-berry, cherry and wet-earth aromas and flavors. Medium body. Firm and medium, velvety tannins and a flavorful finish. Shows a balance and finesse with cream tannins. A blend of sangiovese, canaiolo and ciliegiolo. Drink now.

SEREGO ALIGHIERI BELLOVILE 2018 (91/100)
Vermentino Toscana igt

Aromas and flavors of sliced melon and apples. Full body, creamy texture and a rich palate. Shows depth and intensity for a vermentino. Drink now.
