Masi’s Amarone range remains at the top of the international rankings

Alison Napjus, renowned Wine Spectator wine critic, gave our Amarone Costasera 2013 a score of 91/100 (Wine Spectator, 28 February edition). See below for her tasting notes.

Costasera 2013 – 91 points
Light, taut tannins create a chewy frame for the flavors of wild cherry, cured tobacco, woodsy spice and mineral in this creamy, medium- to full-bodied red.

Wine Enthusiast (Advance Buying Guide March 2019) gave excellent scores to the entire Masi Amarone range, with the Amarone Riserva di Costasera 2012 and the Cantina Privata Boscaini Campolongo di Torbe 2011 cru taking to the podium with 94 points. There were 93 points for the Amarone Costasera 2013, 92 points for the Cantina Privata Boscaini Mazzano 2011 cru and 91 points for the Vaio Armaron Serego Alighieri 2012.

Riserva Costasera 2012 – 94 points
Cocoa, baked plum, toast, culinary spice and leather aromas shape the nose. Full bodied and elegant, the smooth, dense palate doles out fleshy black cherry, blackberry jam, licorice and clove while velvety tannins provide structure. It closes on an espresso note.

Campolongo di Torbe 2011 – 94 points
Enticing scents of cocoa, blackberry preserve, new leather and baking spice fill the glass. The full-bodied palate combines velvety finesse and power, delivering spiced plum, raisin, clove and tobacco setagainst polished fine-grained atannins. Fresh acidity lifts the rich flavors while a licorice note lingers on the close.

Costasera 2013 – 93 points
This opens with aromas of black-skinned fruit, underbrush, tobacco and culinary spice. The full-bodied velvety palate doles out prune, soaked cherry, star anise and mocha wrapped up in polished tannins. It boasts enough fresh acidity to lift the rich flavors.

Mazzano 2011 – 92 points
Underbrush, tobacco leaf, toasted oak and leather aromas lead the way. It's tight and concentrated, offering cassis, kirsch, prune, clove and licorice alongside firm, close-grained tannins that grip the close. It closes on a hazelnut note.

Vaio Armaron 2012 – 91 points
Scorched earth, prune, Asian spice, toasted nut and leather aromas make their way to the forefront. The brawny palate offers raisin, cherry marinated in spirits, licorice and tobacco set against fine-grained tannins.

Finally, there were further great scores from American publication Wine & Spirits (February 2019 edition), for the whole Masi Amarone range: 95 points for the Campolongo di Torbe 2011, 94 for the Mazzano 2011, 93 for the Costasera 2013, 92 for the Riserva Costasera 2012 and 91 for the Vaio Armaron.
