Harvest 2020: a good vintage

The harvest at Masi vines has started in the best possible way, suggesting a good year in all areas of its wine-making activity - in Valpolicella Classica and the other classic zones of Verona, Trentino, through to Valdobbiadene, Friuli and Tuscany. All the vines were luckily unharmed by the violent storm that struck Veneto late August.

Overall, the Masi Technical Group reports, the grapes look to be perfectly healthy and ideally ripened in all areas.

As regards the mapping of the Masi vine grape harvest, in Valpolicella Classica, the grape yield falls within the average of the last 10 years, showing particularly high quality up in the high hills. Having started selection for the drying of the grapes for both Campofiorin and Amarone Costasera on 10 September in the Piedmont zone, the harvest will continue late in September into the hills, in both the Serego Alighieri vines and the prestigious Campolongo Trobe and Mazzano crus.

Harvest of the Bardolino Classicobegan last 13 September, with good quantitative and qualitative expectations. The same applies to the Colbaraca vine in Soave.

In Trentino, in the Conti Bossi Fedrigotti estates, the harvest began late August with Pinot Nero and Chardonnay for the spumante base of the Conte Federico; this was followed by the Pinot Grigio of Pian del Griso. The Merlot and Cabernet are expected to be harvested during the last ten days of September, for the Fojaneghe. High quality in a rigorously manual harvest for true pedigree wines.

Moving east, to Canevel, Valdobbiadene, the harvest began on 27 August with Chardonnay grapes for the DOCG Brut Valdobbiadene: a healthy grape with excellent acidity. Starting 4 September, the Glera grapes began their harvest, which is now in full flow. Here too, these rolling hills suggest excellent forecasts.

In Friuli, the Pinot Grigio harvest is complete and we are now proceeding with the Merlot and Refosco. A good harvest all round, in both quantity and quality.

Finally, in Tuscany, Poderi Bell’Ovile Serego Alighieri start with the Merlot. Before September closes, Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Ciliegiolo will have been harvested, whilst the Vermentino will wait until the end of the month.
